The one that got away

That’s it! — today’s best catch,
if I can catch him.
Young, Asian, lean and tall,
his hair a crown of crow-black spikes,
complexion flushed, eyes bright,
white overalls splotched and spotted,
smeared with paint,
singular, alone in his pristine fish-tank
of freshly-painted space.

Ducking out of his line of sight,
I quickly prepare my camera,
relishing the prospect of
a successful shot.

Returning to the glass through which
I’d first spotted him,
I see he’s laid down his long-handled roller
beside the tray of white paint …

and has vanished.
