Panis angelicus

This morning, Radio New Zealand Concert played César Franck‘s setting of Panis angelicus – the Matins hymn for Corpus Christi – in honour of the composer’s birthday in 1822.

One of Franck’s best known shorter works, Panis Angelicus was originally scored for tenor solo with organ and string accompaniment, but it has subsequently been arranged for other vocal and instrumental combinations.

The Latin text, from Sacris Solemniis, was written by Thomas Aquinas around 1273. Here is a link that gives both the Latin and an English translation.
